Of all the vehicles on Australian roads 75% are passenger vehicles. In 2005 it was recorded by the Australian Bureau of Statistics that Australians traveled 206,283 million kilometers. That equates to an average distance of 15,500 kilometers per vehicle, per year.

There are three main players in the Australian market; Toyota, GM Holden and Ford. The quantity "other" is the cumulative sales of over 45 other brands. Toyota holds 22.4% of the market, GM Holden holds 13.1% and Ford has 11%.

In the year to September 784,932 vehicles have been sold in Australia, this is up 0.3% on last years figure at the same time of 761,384 vehicles. Of the total sales, Toyota has managed to move 183,806 units (to September), GM Holden 99,600 units and Ford 81,416 units. This has come at a time of rising petrol prices and fear of a recession.
Globally of the big three, Toyota is the only name which is expanding at present.

Petrol prices have affected car sales by type but not by volume, this could suggest that the public transport message is not getting through. Small car sales are up 4.1% whereas large car sales are down 11.8%. The two most iconic names in Australian motoring, the Holden Commodore and the Ford Falcon are both down. The Holden Commodore down 16% and Ford's Falcon down 5.9%, Ford's smaller slump could be attributed to the release of the FG model.
